I know this is going to be unpopular with some, but I am seriously considering a Mac and I am annoyed by the idea of it.

I NEED MacOS or Windows for my work. There is one application that does not work in Linux yet and there are no alternatives. It is a critical work application.

With that being said, you can probably guess that Linux is my preferred OS of choice.

I am currently using a Windows desktop for my work, but I do run into situations where I need a laptop. The laptop I am using now is a Thinkpad from 2021 with Fedora. I actually really love this computer. My only real complain is that the webcam is pretty garbage.

So, I think I need a new computer. My choices are Windows laptops which have decent pricing with good specs, or Apple which is extremely expensive for what you get.

I’m really annoyed with Windows’ ads, bloat, and general lack of privacy; specifically Recall. On the other hand, it is hard to justify spending an extra $400 on a Macbook air just to get a 1tb hard drive. My work files alone take up a little more than 200gb.

I guess this is just a rant. I’m not looking for any solutions as what I am really looking is the ability to use Linux for my work which is not an option at the moment.

    Recall (and copilot) can be disabled. You can reinstall windows to have all the ads and debloat disabled using microwin in Chris Titus’ WinUtils (great tool). I do this every time I reinstall windows for clients. With Mac they are overpriced but you do get some semblance of quality and support with that as a trade off.

    I usually just buy cheapish laptops with Windows and dual but Linux. With that said, I’m digging new Mac hardware. Good battery life and fast.

    Install windows 10 or 11 LTSC from here.

    Spoiler

    Activation scripts are available from this same source as well.

    Use a tool like O&O Shutup after major updates.

    This gives you much longer support with much less of Microsoft’s BS so you can survive until Linux is a viable option.

    I mean at that point, why don’t you just dual boot Mac OS with your preferred distribution of Linux?

      My problem is not with the Mac operating system, it’s mostly the pricing of their hardware. I’m not going into debt over it or anything, but knowing that I’m overpaying just stings a bit.

        I feel we are having some kind of miscommunication. You can buy any standard x64 processor your preferred graphics card, your preferred motherboard, your preferred PSU etc. hardware to run Mac OS and Linux machine.

            Yep, that’s what I was thinking of. I was not aware they that compatibility had not carried over to 64-bit however that sucks. And you’re certain there’s no way to do your mission critical application over a browser environment or something similar?

              64-bit is fine, I’m talking about the switch to Apple silicon. Once they fully retire x86 processors from their line, there won’t be an easy code base to use on PC desktops.
