In PieFed, communities are grouped under topics . Some of these topics are becoming quite big already (e.g. Technology and could perhaps be split up while there are probably very important topics that escaped my attention.

If you’d like a new topic, please suggest it in the comments below. There needs to be at least 3 reasonably active communities (active enough to have had a post in the last week) that can be put into the topic, to make it worth it.

I think Arts & Craft could be split - reasonably - into “Art” and “Crafts”. There’s a pretty interesting community for crafts in the threadiverse - especially [email protected], but also communities like [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected]. They’re unfortunately a bit drowned out in the Arts & Craft topic, as most of the posts come from communities such as [email protected] and [email protected]. :)

Agreed. However if ‘Crafts’ was separate it’ll be very quiet.

Also dungeons and dragons is dominating ‘Hobbies’. Yet DnD feels way too niche to be it’s own topic.

For similar reasons, yesterday I split ‘Lemmy’ off from ‘Fediverse’ which I’m not 100% happy with.

Sub-topics wouldn’t stop the flooding of top-level topics but within them the sub-topics would provide more flood-free islands. We’re going to need the option for people to block individual communities, too.

Hobbies seems like a prime cabdidate for splitting up, as that’s fairly broad. From what’s in there tabletop gaming seems like it would have enough communities already to make a topic.

Technology has a lot of android/apple stuff, so maybe that could be either “Smartphones” or “Operating Systems” but that clashes a bit with Linux/Foss. A separate “Hardware” topic might make sense too.
