Video storage sounds expensive…
You need a human to see what is actually interesting and what will be interesting to most people.
I’ve seen communities where hundreds of posts are scrolling by, nobody cares. Because it’s not interesting.
Why would I wrote a blog under these guys domain name? Remember medium, and how they locked every blog under a forced sign-in, so the content is no longer freely available on the web?
This seems like the same idea.
It was, but it has communists on it, which is annoying to most large instance owners. So much that they don’t even federate with it.
Yeah those are the thumbnails I think?
Ok I guess I better go look myself…
It’s uploaded to one instance and other instances are linking to that one for the picture.
I don’t think it’s as bad as you think. If someone uploads illegal content to any service, they remove it of course. Same thing on Lemmy.
Original images and videos are not spread across instances, they stay on the instance they were uploaded on. However, thumbnails are distributed.
Definently had the feeling of walking into a gay bar and not knowing anyone, like the article says.
I thought it was pretty cool personally because I never interact with gay people (afaik) in real life. And we have computer tech as a common interest, that’s why we are on mastadon… But for people who are not into tech, I guess it’s not so much to talk about maybe.
The thing is, i think social media today has created a lot of censorship out of necessity. There are people out there who just aren’t mature or intelligent enough to have a conversation without insulting or pushing people down.
And because of they, we all suffer. We get over-moderated, we get called trolls etc.
I think I would like a platform where people actually have to act like adults. But that’s hard. Hacker news have kind of made it, but they are also well known for not being open minded at all.
Depends on what you get moderated for. I once posted a question about trans people and I got banned from some Lemmy.ml community because they thought I was trolling them. I wasn’t.
It’s just sometimes hard for moderators to know what kind of person they are dealing with. But someone’s posting history is usually enough to see if they are trolling or not.
Also what is trolling. It’s supposed to mean that you intentionally upset people for fun. How can anyone know if it’s intentionally or not. To some people, asking a question is trolling because they don’t see why anyone would ask that if they didn’t try to upset people.
So… It’s interesting.
For better or worse, the moderation policies of Lemmy.world is seen as “the fediverse”.
Almost everyone decided to use that instance, so… It’s the default choice still.
I’m sorry but how is single sign on with some big tech player account like github or Microsoft considered a privacy feature? It sounds like anti privacy?
Kagi is making some money by providing value that Google can’t. I’m not sure if it would be enough for mozilla, but Kagi is making a profit now.
Sadly, both of these companies still depend on Google.
First thing in their privacy statement:
You can claim that they are lying but I personally do not think they do.
Google is not private and they track you on every web page, building up a profile of your searches, weather you are logged in or not.
I think its been interesting to watch. What has happened is that there is now a super large instance in Lemmy.world, and a handful of smaller ones with above a thousand users.
The promise of proper decentralization didn’t really happen. There are hundreds of small instances but they are not self contained and completely depend on the larger ones to get content.
Defederation seems to be common since admins don’t want to deal with moderating hostile conversations, which makes a lot of sense. But it also makes it a echo chamber to some degree. We see mostly memes and jokes instead of meaningful discussions. So it’s great for a fun time but not so much more than that.
Still, I’m happy it’s an alternative to reddit and those shitty services. I love that it’s run by ordinary people and not tech companies. And no ads or tracking. All good stuff.
No this looks very primitive. It’s not the 1970s. Add a circle and some colors.
Cool. I’m a ordinary white man, not special at all.
All of this is the opposite of being real. People who are actually real have no attraction to publishing what they are doing to their friends at random times.
Creating different accounts is the only way to have privacy in the first place. Different logins makes you look like you are different people. Which is the point.
