Because URLs are usually in ASCII. That was a standard. Check RFC 1738 and 3986. Now, you can use percent encoding, but why use that. It just complicates things.

You won’t get non latin usernames anytime soon. But you can change the display name using non latin charactets
If that were to happen, the receiving end wouldn’t know who sent which vote, thus making spamming extremely easy.
Them promoting crypto is fishy. I don’t like Nostr.
PMs today aren’t really private as in E2EE. They’re private as in only you, the receiver and the “trust me bro” company can see them. In special data breach cases, the attacker as well.
Reviews and the forums is my idea. Basically, every anime, manga, etc. will have its own community and the reviews and forum threads will be a new post. I also want to include VN tracking in it if I can find a source for it, unlike MAL.
I will try and make a federated anime tracking website in summer. Not sure if that is unique though.
Nostr is crypto bullshit.
the e sex is real
Instead of the fediverse, it would be good if users switched to Revolt instead. Or maybe we can make a federated discord alternative, though Revolt was talking about federation a while ago.
we’re doomed
This is what I like about the fediverse
Sorry yes, I forgot donations.
I guess. An average 30 sec video in Tiktok is around 10mb. So with a S3 storage. For a monthly budget of 10€, you could roughly store 500k of those videos. Taking also account the server bills (10-20€) That would be 30€ per month. For a million of those videos would be 20€ so monthly around 50€ euros. For people that really want to host one. I guess you could. But it’s definitely more expensive than something like Lemmy.
Okay but storing videos is very expensive. Even in its compressed form. Even images are being disabled in some instances in lemmy because of this. And videos are hundreds of images composed together. Who will run them?
That would be extremely expensive to run for an individual.
I prefer matrix, thanks.
“Mod logs are always publicly visible in the public mod log.”
This is seen as a bad thing?
Using ASCII in URLs is simple and is less error prone than “supporting” unicode via percent encoding. It is also just a convention to use ASCII for usernames in many platforms. ASCII is also supported out of the box in major OSes while some unicode characters might not. What about impersonation? And what about people trying to type in the username of someone that uses unicode? It is not logical to use unicode in this case.
