Where possible I think E2EE should be the default. So if you want to collaborate on documents you have to explicitly check a box that might say, “By checking this box I understand that I am opting into additional features at the cost of encryption.”

I think encryption should be at the core of this project because it (1) protects the admins from some liability if/when a breach occurs and (2) the whole point of trying to get away from Google and similar hosts is to keep them from using our own data against us.

You could also beat the burden by using some of that “free speech” money to get the Global Oppression Party to do its fucking job and check the President.

Accepting payments and creating “contracts” over the Fediverse is no bueno at the current time. I think it would require some kind of 3rd party, almost PayPal-esque (PayPal has its own controversy) service that would create the obligation and associated penalties that come with an online transaction. Could be the instance itself but as you said that’s a risk most instance owners wouldn’t take.

I think there could at least be some kind of button or check box that says, “I don’t need to know how the Fediverse works, just sign me up!” and it would randomly choose one of the big instances.

From other replies it sounds like this isn’t guaranteed. I tried logging into pixelfed using my Mastodon info and it didn’t work (stopped me as soon as I gave the instance).

On one hand that’s a good thing.

On the other hand you had to wait for our government to go fascist to start making the bare minimum of effort so here’s a temporary “Go Fuck Yourself” from those of us that knew enough to leave two years ago.

I could also see this turning into a form of DoS attack. I’m sure there’s very little leeway in ignoring “bad faith” reports so if you have an instance you could be responsible for investigating thousands of reports per day. And if you take the safe route and remove anything that’s reported, until deemed safe, you might as well turn off your instance.

There’s gotta be some kind of limited liability for this kind of thing. I mean, banks wouldn’t be liable if someone put csam in a safe deposit box or (assuming they don’t x-ray packages) UPS shipping csam in a sealed package. I think there just needs to be reasonable safeguards against it but I don’t know if any of that is built into the software.

Got the browser to hide scores but Boost seems to ignore the setting.

You can’t have accountability and anonymity. There are people that post, not just upvote, garbage all day long. There’s also plenty of occasions where people have been shamed for past posts in completely unrelated threads. I don’t disagree with those things being public, otherwise we might as well use Pastebin, but we don’t need one more way to judge people. It’s also the simplest of acts. I’ve upvoted right-wing posts before but not because I agree but because they were making valid points and not resorting to personal attacks or demagoguery.

A millionaire being opposed by billionaires? Yeah, I’m fine with that.
