It’s simply acting as a connector. And directing traffic around Nat Etc for lay people or those who don’t want to bother with setting up and securing server software or such things. The site isn’t hosting the file. Sure you can host your own FTP etc. But there is a lot of security risks and vulnerabilities that arise because of that. You can even host your own Magic wormhole. It’s under MIT license. Just have to open the ports Etc. It should however theoretically have a lot less attack surface than HTTP FTP and similar protocols. Nothing is invulnerable of course.

Authoritarians are authoritarian first. Everything else is a very distant second. I really hate when people call Marxist leninists/tankies fascist. They do a lot of the same things but there are distinct differences which makes one different from the other.
I think with the heavy resurgence of fascist politics around the globe right now. A lot of people sort of just learned the term Fascism and just randomly apply it to things it shouldn’t be. The truth is Marxist leninists are to tankies what Liberals are to fascism. And the funny thing is both groups will usually downvote that heavily LOL. Lemmy.ml federates with hexbear and grad. As a world user I don’t see hexbear and grad because world blocks them thankfully. Unless you are on server X what server X blocks in no way impacts what you see. So they need to petition their local admin.
That said. I think the only reason world still federates with lemmy.ml. is that so many open source projects communities are still there. They need to get moved off to proper instances like KDE or Mozilla have done. Or we need to start a dedicated instance for it.
Hex bear and Leningrad are both defederated. Just lemmy.ml isn’t which I have blocked. Mostly because it’s annoying ending up on one of their communities and then having them get all upset when you point out basic facts.
I criticize US imperialism all the time. Not even a warning let alone a ban. So I don’t think that’s the case.
There are some nice people. However that does not negate the glaring issues with the instance.

Gonna put this out there. Ended up in a thread on ML the other day. The poster/admin got a little unhinged, over 4 down votes. 4. Took to the admin panel to see who dared down vote him. Convinced he had been the victim of the tiniest not swarm ever.
It’s troubling behavior for anyone with power.
Most often I’ve seen instances use as super communities. Largely revolving around a bigger topic. KDE runs their own with their own subcommunities for instance. They are far from the only ones. Just the one I use the most and a came to mind first. Having your own instance slap server allows you far more control over your communities then just hosting on someone else’s server. But from an end user perspective very largely transparent. not even being noticeable oftentimes.
Such tolerance! Much acceptance! Granted it is a complex and nuanced situation. But squash, is that something tolerant groups do?

I’m 50, from the US. Raised in a traditionally liberal family. Goth since the 80s, and absolutely a black sheep. I’ll criticize liberals all day every day when they deserve it. No love for them here. I got nothing to hide. And frankly who you’re close to. That’s a red herring. You will almost never find someone who attacks ml power structures on countries more often and more viciously than people formerly from them.
Respectfully, I get that you have a lot of people disingenuously attacking your ideology as much as you do theirs. But people can and do have valid criticisms and problems with it. Despite being generally down for Marxism. I don’t see any reason for anyone outside of my machine shop to own the means of production there. Only people from the shop should. Not some Baker who will never set foot in it. Not some politician in some politburo thousands of miles away.
Frankly we have huge issues here with not having enough parties actually able to represent people. I don’t see how having less parties is going to fix that. Nor do I see the benefit of having a party in charge that would seek to jail me for life, possibly kill me, or brainwash me for dissenting with the state. There is no re-education. But the admins on world haven’t been summarily banning people for “tanky shit” like the ML admins have been banning for “liberal shit”. The hypocrisy of your critique is why they rightfully call out those from there. You. Making them.

Well running a server and no longer interacting with a service can be two different things. From an organizational standpoint I could absolutely understand them not wanting or needing the expense of another service to maintain. Even for just their own use. As long as they still have accounts and post to the fediverse. I don’t see a big issue
