The two things I need are notifications (not push, just an indication on screen that I have a notification like I get on the web app) and copy/paste. Neither of these things seem present.

Wow! I had no idea this was possible! I’ve done just this and, you’re right! Still about the same experience as in a browser (duh) but nice that it’s not Just Another Tab in your browser to get lost
The sad truth is that non-techy types will never want to host something themselves unless there’s a reason why doing so is better. I’m not just talking about better the way you and I think of better, either. Nobody really cares about privacy or security or ownership of data. A lot of people like to say those things matter but until it’s as easy to host your own email as signing up for gmail, and doing so provides all the fringe benefits you get with Google, you’re not going to get completely non-technical people self hosting.
You’re right, though. As part of this, there needs to be a way to have an all-in-one package that defaults to enabling the things you’re talking about. There are a lot of plug-n-play methods of self hosting any number of things, but the hard part of hosting is doing it right and securely.
Newsboat is my current RRS reader of choice. It’s terminal based and has great support for services like TTRSS.
Also, just FYI, I’m a contributor to neonmodem and we have an open enhancement request in the queue to add RSS support. I’m currently focused on improving usability of the current feature set and improving the lemmy support for it but I also want to use it for RSS so it’s something that I definitely plan to add if someone doesn’t do it before I get to it. No idea when I’ll have time but just know that it’s on the radar.
I used to used a *dactyl plugin (can’t remember which one exactly, I remember there being a couple) for FF before Mozilla switched to the new plugin framework and it was fantastic. Since then I’ve switched to Vimium. Is there anything to be gained from tridactyl over vimium?
Oh man, I had totally forgotten about downtheall! Gotta make sure to add that one back. I used to use that ALL the time for file archiving.
Definitely one of my favorites. My only wish is that they had a more flexible way to predefine lists of domains and containers and/or do wildcard matching for domains.
Migrating the knowledge is one part but it doesn’t fix the dead links in the search results from major search providers. And, unfortunately, that is a hard problem to solve because a static (or nearly static) page like a wiki on a niche website doesn’t necessarily get the same ranking in the indexer as a community on Reddit would.
I think what they’re trying to say here is that lemmy.world is a site with a community and they’ve got a problem of having a toxic community that’s abusing another community. THAT is their problem and they need to fix it through moderation. Until then, other communities will do what they need to do to limit the damage caused by the users of their community. It’s not solely up to Lemmy.world to create the tools to fix their issue but it is their responsibility to moderate effectively, just like every other community has that responsibility and they have an incentive to work on the tools to make that job easier for themselves but also for all of the communities in the fediverse.
This would be a huge plus, especially if it could be a server-wide multi. Instance maintainers could create /c/[email protected] but make it contain content from a curated list of other federated instances with their own /c/technology or lists could be distributed containing popular technology communities and you could import that list as your /c/technology as a personal multi.
And like some other commenters have said: Lemmy is still very new and no standards and a lot of UX features still need to emerge. I am of the opinion that this fragmentation is a symptom of a UX problem and not inherent to anything specific to Lemmy.
Search needs to be improved to show communities from yet-to-be-discovered instances and provide a way for the user to view them by subscriber, popularity or newest, for example. But right now, it relies on the user to initiate a subscription to a community in another server for server discovery.
I could see a list of “popular instances” emerging at some point as a means for instance maintainers to prepopulate this in the future.m and Lemmy to support importing such a list to seed federation on new instances.
Totally agree. As I said in my post; I am not blaming the mlem or memmy devs here. I understand it’s still new and rapidly evolving. I’m just wondering what the various options are out there so that I can try them and see which one has the features I am looking for. I’m always checking back with mlem after an update to see what’s fixed or added.
