I read an article yesterday that had a brief mention of an advertising manager advising his clients to hold their campaigns, etc and see how this develops. The hold seemed to be less permanent than with Twitter. But seeing how it’s not resolving totally on its own with some communities even permanently abandoning the platform (/r/StarTrek and associated subs), it might start having a bigger impact.
The problem with the libel/slander is unless it falls into a few categories of what’s called per se defamation, you’re required to prove damages. (From the libel’s/slander’s damage to your reputation, not from something like Reddit’s API change destroying his business.)
Especially because that’s basically a lie. The free tier right now is 60 requests per minute, per client, per user. The new free tier is 100 requests per minute per client. If for example you develop a bot or tool and you’d like to give others access to use for their own purposes. You’re now sharing those 100 requests per minute with everyone else using it.
Thankfully the laws aren’t always super dumb and take into account pretext. For example, if he said “If you don’t show up to work in San Francisco then I will take that as your resignation.” then it would be what’s called a constructive dismissal. It is in fact a termination, because the demands are so unreasonable precisely in order to get employees to quit. So he’d still be on the hook for any severance owed, etc
Yeah the API limits are meant to be per client. So developing one client and then telling end users to go get their own API keys is going to cause problems. Potentially pulled from app stores and hit with lawsuits type problems.
Didn’t Nova get sold to some analytics company? Not sure if that’s who I’d trust with my launcher.
So, the actual reason for the change is likely their dumb handling of capitalization in the original scheme. To use your username as an example:
copygirl#1234, Copygirl#1234, COPYGIRL#1234, CopyGirl#1234, etc
Every permutation of capitalization is available as a distinct username. And with the low price of Nitro you get to customize your discriminator, which could make impersonation a very real problem.
Oh nice I was looking for a good Trek community. Did /r/tuvixinstitute /r/daystrominstitute move over?
Nah I think it’s clear he wanted it to leak. He’s just an egomaniac who thinks he’s actually a good leader. That section of the memo was for investor confidence. (It’ll pass, no revenue effect so far, etc.) The other part about warning employees not to wear Reddit gear in public for fear of violence was meant for the press and for the uninformed, to try to garner sympathy and paint the protestors as bad actors.
Um. The only drama I’ve seen about Discord is the name change crap. Unfortunately that was a necessary change because of their own original stupidity with usernames and capitalization.
Evilcoleslaw#1234 EvilColeslaw#1234 evilcoleslaw#1234
Every permutation of capitalization can be a unique username under their original format, and for the low low price of Nitro you can change your discriminator at will to impersonate someone quite convincingly.
/I/iamthatthis was quoted in the interview as saying he didn’t think the math worked even at $5 given the app store cut and other API prices they pay (eg Imgur). Reddit’s quoted $1 per user per month was laughable, with the top 5% or so users costing $7-8 per month. I just don’t foresee this working out. Hopefully they start allowing you to monitor and log usage or I have a feeling this guys gonna get a nasty bill one month.
Cool. I was going to hold out hope that something might change. But I’ve just deleted my account of 12+ years.
“I am sorry to say this, but please be mindful of wearing Reddit gear in public,” CEO Steve Huffman says in an internal memo. “Some folks are really upset, and we don’t want you to be the object of their frustrations.”
Oh piss off, Spez. First you slander /u/iamthatthis and accuse him of blackmail and now you insinuate people mad about your greedy business decisions are out to commit physical violence against your employees?

Oh piss off, Spez.
It’s fine. The content is slightly more sparse but that’s unavoidable given current population levels. The basics are there in terms of content though. There are some rough edges with regard to stability and particularly mobile app quality – especially as someone more used to one of the more polished third party Reddit apps. But it’s already improved drastically since last week, and given time I’m sure it’ll only improve even more.
This should come as a shock to basically no one. Did everyone forget they were spliced directly into AT&T’s fiber sucking up everything they wanted during the Bush administration? Of course they’re buying this legally available for sale information.
Their problem is that iMessage falls back to that instead of them adopting RCS, and treats MMS in particular way worse (terrible image quality, etc)
Facebook Messenger is more popular than WhatsApp here. So it’s not like there aren’t alternatives.
