It can seem authoritarian or an overreaction of you don’t know why the decision was made.

Once a critic learns that defederating was a last-choice decision reluctantly made because of inadequate mod tools and a small, overwhelmed staff, things make more sense. If they still want to complain after that, I just walk away. Sometimes people have already decided to be angry regardless of what the facts are, and debate never helps in those situations.

I’m wondering what “over 400 blocked instances” means in practical terms. Most of us have no idea if 400 is a large or small number in relation to the size of the fediverse. Most of us don’t know how big those blocked instances are, or if they even exist anymore.

Mostly, as you explain, I don’t care about numbers if what they’re blocking is hatred and abuse. Maybe “over 400 blocked instances” is supposed to be a criticism, but to me, it sounds like the people running Beehaw are doing their jobs well.

Yeah, I tend to think that most of the people who left wouldn’t be valuable members of the community anyway. Maybe they’re too impatient to deal with software that isn’t fully mature, maybe they can’t deal with the fact that most Lemmy instances are somewhere between leftish and outright communism, or maybe the somewhat chaotic nature of the fediverse turns them off. Whatever. I hope they find something that suits them.

I also hope, for their own sake, that the “something” doesn’t involve going back to reddit.

I tend not to focus on anything. I just scroll through “all” and see what catches my eye.

This is a little scary. You can find yourself banned pretty easily. All it takes is to annoy someone with nothing better to do than dig through your post history, and find something old that you wrote hastily which might break a rule. I know because it happened to me.

Yeah. Even though I’ll probably never use Pixelfed (I don’t use Instagram, either, or anything like it) I still acknowledge that’s a pretty cool feature.

If any instance ever requires a captcha for something as trivial as an upvote, I’ll simply stop upvoting on that instance.

Is this man mentally ill? Is he deliberately trying to get himself fired?

A big reason Musk has gotten away with things so far is because he spent years making himself famous. He’s also among the richest people in America. Even if they don’t like him, people will cut him some slack (up to a point) because he’s Elon Fucking Musk.

It’s even his name is in the title of this article, because nobody knows or cares who Steve Huffman is. Until you get into the article itself, Huffman is referred to as “Reddit CEO”.

If the choice is tolerating trolls and jerks vs. dealing with communities that are fragmented and harder to find, I’ll choose fragmentation every time.

I just wanna say what’s on my mind (trite though it may be) without all the pedantry, trolling, and hostility. I’m not a mean person IRL, I don’t put up with jerks IRL, and I want the same thing online. Everything else is a distant second. I like Beehaw.

By the same token, I support anyone who disagrees, and I encourage them to find an instance that’s a better match. I just want everyone to be happy and feel comfortable expressing themselves. I hope people find an instance that suits them; they shouldn’t feel like they need to change to suit the instance.

I can’t decide who to root for here. They both suck, so I guess I’ll just enjoy the fact that they’re fighting and I don’t have to care at all.

Beehaw doesn’t use downvotes, but some instances do. Do the downward-facing arrows disappear, or simply not do anything when on an instance that doesn’t use downvotes? …or are those arrows something else entirely?

In related news, Elon Musk has been adamant about ending remote work, but that’s likely to be difficult without, you know, office space.
