I think that a forced paid subscription will probably kill it anyway long term, who in their right mind would pay a subscription to access Reddit?

Also don’t forget that these app owners themselves are running a business and probably make a bunch of money from their apps that they don’t want to see evaporate with the changes.

I think it’s important not to become overly attached to an identity on any social media platform, which is kinda the concept they’re going for here. Your post history doesn’t really matter in the big scheme of things for the most part and will still be there anyway unless that server shuts down (even then there’s ways around that if you’re really concerned).

Personally, I was already in the habit of creating a new Reddit account about once a year so that any previous baggage, things I’d revealed about myself and so forth didn’t follow me for too long. Once I got over that big karma number go up dopamine hit I stopped caring at all for my previous identities. I say this as someone who has accounts on Reddit dating back to almost the very beginning.

I might be wrong but my memory suggests that Reddit was basically forced to eventually act in the removal of that sub and they let it and many other questionable subs linger and prosper for a long time until it became too big to ignore.

Me too. I suffer from PTSD myself so I avoid things like the war coverage in Ukraine. The app is full of it and I can’t filter it fully like I can in RIF.

Yeah, that’s pretty bad too but I was at least willing to accept there is a valid reason for that to keep the lights on.

However, when they go as far to break the core functionality of the website and turn it into another Facebook with psychological manipulation at its core then that’s a whole other thing entirely.

The official Reddit app reminds me of that vibe in that it’s trying to be an algorithm-based feed of /r/all garbage to piss you off in the name of engagement and doesn’t resemble the Reddit I originally fell in love with years ago.

I made an irc client in MIRC using MIRC script before it had multi-server capability and thought I was so smart and then a few months later they released the update with it in it. Oh well, it was fun at the time!

Tried the official Reddit app today and boy people weren’t joking when they say it sucks. I thought it’d just be the usual experience plus some ads but I was totally wrong.

The official app doesn’t respect your subreddit subscriptions at all, instead force feeding you feeds of whatever their algorithm thinks will drive maximum engagement just like a shit version of Facebook. The “hot” etc functionality is completely stipped from it entirely.

Guess I’m here to stay on the fediverse now.

Right now I can’t see any KBin content from Beehaw but thats on Beehaw I believe not including their content back. Hopefully that changes soon.

True, but the same is inversely possible too, particularly if they heavily infect some of the more popular servers in the federation.

I too am optimistic however I think it’d be rather easy to push fringe views as mainstream ideas as things currently stand on Lemmy etc, just like on Voat. But you gotta start somewhere and I’m glad somebody is trying.

I’d rather use my social media time on a platform like what we’re on now and use Google when I need to find an answer to some question that might be answered on Reddit.

My only hope is that it doesn’t turn into Voat and get overwhelmed with fringe view conspiracy cookers and go to poop.
