I have a dream that one day I be part of a platform where one will not be judged by the glamor of their username but by the quality of their discourse.
how much can someone limit the instance? Like can they not allow magazine creation? It would be good for the good folks who run instances to think about scope and set limits. That does mean some large instances will be the backbone but that does not change that small instances will lighten the load and increase robustness.
Is the shutdown about cost per user? why not just limit signups in a case like that? I sorta assumed some instances were personal instances with no real signups and some where more open public. I don’t see why someone can’t run something with the intention of carrying like 10 users max or 100 or 1000 or what not.
I did not. It was actually these which made me realize I did not like it as I did not like the leafy green and previously I had just hated some sauces and such. I actually thought I hated avacado because I did not like the quac I had tasted. Unfortunately im far enough away I doubt I will remember to try one of these with this alternative if I get the opportunity to try again.
Isn’t it basically the same. I often wonder if horse radish and wasabi and cilantro are like in the same class because I don’t like any of them.
doh should have put vietnamese in that other thread. total respect for the sandwich but I hate cilantro.
I feel if as much power is put at the user level it will be good. let users block and subscribe to anything at all and if we could bring in trust cafes mechanic where you can reduce or increase view as a semi subscribe/block kind of thing. For subscribe I want to subscribe to someones content but also like their block lists. Basically we need a way for it to be a cesspool yet the user can make it great. I have this view because I have kinda seen in in practice. MMO were chat was a cesspool but after blocking like 12 folks it was a delight. I would absolutely love a symetric block to where block wins. IE blocking someone also acts like them blocking you.
I did it and have not used the account since. Was going to nuke the account but as time went by I figure I might want to rerun the nuke process but I have been to lazy to do so. I have checked it and they have not seem to have accidentally restored stuff so far anyway which I was kinda expecting.
honestly only two is pretty scary. they really should have half a dozen
certainly not in companies. pull requests can be authorized by a set of rules which is usually some automated checks and review by X number of members of the group who owns it.
wait so mbin is all down to one person controlling it? No one else can manage the version control? That just makes it the same as kbins boat then!
yeah I guess its like ernest created kbin and that is something but this guy forked it as part of a multiperson run project. I feel like it should be like technical creator or something.
creator of mbin. its just a fork of kbin and its not like hes made all the commits since.
I sorta wish the strengths of the fediverse could be utilized by having some redundancy. Im not saying every instance should replicate everything but it would be great if you could make an account for two or three instance and then get some secret to copy and paste into each other to link them up. Maybe even allow a max of 3 for syncing.
I agree here. I would like the power to be with the individual. let us block at all levels, by keyword, etc. Let me subscribe to anything as well including other folks block lists.
no idea but I have not been able to get the site for awhile. earnest briefly came back and said he was handing some stuff off and it worked for a day or so and then its been pretty much offline since then. long enough im not even sure how long its been now. unfortunately I had trouble transfering over the config. im going to have to subscirbe and block from zero I think.
kbin had collections. Im on mbin now and I was not able to find it but im not sure if that is just because I may not be able to find the config. Trust cafe (not part of the federation) has a neat concept which I would love to see in the fediverse. Basically all the things you can block or subscribe also has a trust which is basically a weight on how much you favor it. By default they are 50 but you can raise or lower them. So you could drop news sources to 25 and hobby ones to 75 lets say and now the hobbies will be given greater weight in your feed. You can do it with users to so if you have someone who posts good stuff you can weight them higher. On the other side if someones stuff tends to be crap but you don’t want to outright block them you can just dial them down to 5 or something
made this one during the last one and been spending more time on it.
Good to know word is still bleeding over since the api debacle. slashdot was the first thing which made me feel a bit like back in the newgroup days and reddit moreso but it just went down hill. The federation is the closest yet I have found to those lost years of command line internet.
