The problem I see with almost every Fedi product is that they just try to clone whatever is popular instead of considering what makes sense.

Character limits make absolutely no sense.

Tagging 12 different fuckin people automatically 34 replies down the thread makes no sense.

The layout and the way it’s displayed makes no sense.

It makes no sense for PixelFed to federate with other micro-blogging services or to include the teeny tiny fucking buttons.

Lemmy has very easy to follow and legible threads but Twitter/Mastodon ones just confuse the absolute fuck out of me.

“We” created the Fedi to have interoperable systems and to give users autonomy over their accounts and their feeds. That’s why there’s an option for users to block other users and even entire servers.

No one wants to give Meta a “free pass”. We want a way for Meta users to see that they can leave the platform, escape the ads and data-mining without losing access to their friends, family, news, etc. It’s specifically because Meta is so terrible that we want to federate.

You see it as the Fediverse promoting Meta but we see the opposite.

‘Wait and see’ I hear people say

I’ve literally never seen anyone say this except FediPacters as a strawman. No one needs to “wait and see”. We know exactly what we’re getting.

Yeah well that’s great but I don’t want it in my antennae, I want them in my “timeline”. I don’t want to have to page over to antenna and select one every time I load/reload the service.

The benefit is controlling the public narrative. Think about it, how many news media companies get business from Twitter? And now he has the power to suppress their reach or to even kick them off the platform altogether.

Firefish is nice but I’m yet to find a stable instance and also for some unfathomable reason you can’t follow hashtags. And the federation doesn’t really work properly, which is kinda important when 90% of the Fediverse is on Mastodon.

I haven’t seen any with auto translation. I have seen ones with a translation feature but, presumably to conserve resources, it only does it after you click the button, which makes it most pointless, in my opinion.

Honestly the language problem is a huge one. Probably 50% of my feed I can’t even read. There are language filters so that you can set the language of your post but people do not use them. I joined an English-only instance but recently they were accused of being racists so they rolled that rule back.
