Sure thing, Steve-O
Man, these TERF book fans make it easy!
Use the Force, Harry!
Blockus accountus!
Obviously. Unlike OP, I didn’t present it as an absolute fact.
Thanks for the heads up. I’ll block you to improve my experience
Your “separate the author from the works” is your opinion
Even if we do separate them, the works themselves are brimful of problematic tropes and stereotypes
I don’t want Harry Potter fans coming here, good god. I’d rather sound with a habanero-infused DS stylus than hang out with Harry Potter fans.
Someone recently reminded me of the privacy issues here on Lemmy. Not so much concerned about my admin, but the inability to delete content was a big concern for me when I was first deciding on a new platform after leaving reddit at the end of June 2023. Sometimes I forget.
It is a good point, and I somewhat regret making that comment. It just was worded oddly in the article.
I used to spend a lot more time on raddle, but my addiction to fresh content is real, and there’s just a lot more here than there. Perhaps I should “be the change” and all that noise.
I may be naive, but even though I don’t personally know my admin, this is a person who has a stellar reputation, and who I’d trust far more than some massive corporation that has to abide(1) by some anemic laws
(1)if it finds it profitable to do so
This is a good point. Had it been presented like this, it would have hit different.
Yeah, true. It seems like that is a pro that greatly overshadows the cons. Like someone else pointed out, it’s just worded weirdly in the article.
As for funding, the servers are supported on a donation basis, with no big corporations behind them. This leads to a problem concerning user data and privacy, as there isn’t a single accountable entity behind the network.
Bit of a weird take now, isn’t it?
Sometimes it brings me fleeting moments of doomerism, where I think maybe it will be good when we humans are gone
I don’t believe the people saying “just wait and see” are genuine users. I have a hard time fathoming that after Meta’s atrocious history, as well as the history of what happens when large corporations get involved – I simply can’t believe these are more than paid shill accounts.
Or maybe I’m the one who’s naive, thinking that people can’t possibly be so foolish…
Thanks, I actually forgot that one can check!
lemmy.dbzer0.com also blocked Threads
This is what it’s about, right here. I wish more people would understand this. This is not some loose anti-coporate sentiment or senseless alarm sounding. We have example after example of how corporations like Meta, Microsoft, and Google leverage their power to consume and destroy. To say “we just need to be proactive about stopping them” is naive. We’ve said that so many times, and every time we’ve lost.
The only way to win is not to play their game. We can’t let them in in the first place.
Edit: a word
I’m onboard with this as well. I can’t imagine this instance would federeate with Threads, and I respect the admins here a lot, but I’d lose that respect and trust immediately if we aren’t smart enough to defederate from Threads. We’ve seen what happens when these tech giants get their claws in anything.
The more I think about it, you’re right. Having email in the hands of a few for-profit tech giants has really damaged the entire concept of email. Every day, I see comments about people whose unique email servers are automatically filtered by Google and Microsoft’s platforms. It would be massively beneficial to block all the big companies and have a healthier ecosystem like we have here in the fediverse.
Super useful, thanks!
