What else did you expect from Meta?
In both cases, the users are being commodified. I don’t really care about what is good for the advertisers.
They need it if they want to make more money by selling granular data of their users.
@0x1C3B00DA Just chiming in to say this is a very interesting idea!
The stats page counts all users, but the nodeinfo page displays data on active users. Fedidb takes data from the nodeinfo page for each kbin instance it tracks.
I look forward to reading them!
Yes! And this is why I am not in favour of all those Reddit crossposters people are talking about setting up. We are not building a Reddit clone here, but a brand new platform. If you see there is content missing here which is there on Reddit, post it yourself rather than having a bot mindlessly crossposting stuff from there and drowning out content from actual people.
You have some really interesting content. The 2018 interview with Eugen Rochko was a fascinating read!
I agree with your point but I am curious about the sites blocking Firefox part. I have been only using Firefox now for many years and apart from one or two poorly built government websites, have never run into a site that didn’t work.
This Mastodon thread by @lrhodes is a very good read on this subject: https://merveilles.town/@lrhodes/110577852462358211
There are some large and mid-sized instances in the list. The big ones haven’t really signed up so far. My bet is that most of them are waiting to see how Meta’s platform will actually turn out.

Being someone who is on Mastodon and also have to still be on Twitter for professional reasons, I consistently get way more engagement to my posts on Mastodon.
Plus, I have been able to build a larger following in Mastodon within a year than I was able to in Twitter in the eight years or so I have had an account there.
Anybody who expected Mastodon to simply become Twitter minus Elon Musk, was being naive and that didn’t exactly happen. But as a platform on its own, Mastodon is a success. As a user, I consistently see more interesting content on Mastodon than Twitter or pretty much any other social media platform (except maybe Reddit till they decided to screw up).
Honestly, I would recommend everyone here who hasn’t already to sign up to a Mastodon server in addition to Kbin.
