I’ll be real curious if they have browsing data or subs tied to email addresses. How many .gov emails are subbed to nothing but fetish and porn subreddits?

It’s not going to replace actual dedicated writers, but it’s definitely going to hinder people learning to write and make up a large portion of the text online. It may also make it harder for actual writers to be found in all the noise. I heard a little while back about a scifi magazine which had to close its submissions because it was getting too many AI-written stories and sorting through the real versus fake was becoming difficult for them.

As for who’s going to train the AI, that’s part of what I’m arguing here - future LLMs are going to wind up being trained on AI-generated text because there will be so much of it online that screening it out becomes near impossible. Reddit mods already have challenges screening out chat GPT bots from their comments. When a future LLM scrapes the web for writen words, it’ll come back with lots of garbage AI text which will taint its learning pool. AIs will learn from AIs and become worse for it.

I agree, but at the same time, the people who are willing to cross the picket lines are facists. They are desperate to take over any spaces they’re able to and turn those places into hellholes. A bunch of subs are about to be destroyed by right wing nutjobs forcing their way into the top slots. A former T_D mod has already set his sights on aww, which would be the death of a wholesome sub like that.

According to a screenshot shared in the modcoord discord, there’s already a facist trying to take over /r/aww. The user is a former T_D mod, a sub which was actively involved in the January 6 riots and known for its misconduct across Reddit. These are the people that spez wants to empower.

They’re shooting themselves in the foot with this stance. Handing over some very popular subreddits to the most aggressive, dissenting voices in a community who have no experience running that particular subreddit is a recipe for disaster. A hostile takeover is not going to set the new mods in a good light from the get-go, alienating them from the groups they’re supposed to be running and creating an adversarial relationship. This will not turn out the way they’re hoping.

Troubling update from the Reddit admins. They are planning to remove mods from any subs that decide to stay private and hand them over to scabs. This goes back on their previous statements that subs had a right to protest and go private. Mods of one large community have already been contacted by the admins and told that “if you decide to close your community going forward, our Code of Conduct team will reach out with next steps”. Which is a fresh take on “nice kneecaps, shame if something happened to them”.

Same here, joining was a breeze. Someone said earlier that they assumed Beehaw wanted an essay but they really just want a sentence, seemingly to prove you’re not a bot. Maybe if they clarified that they just want a sentence description of why you’re joining versus the more open-ended question it is today?

That’s also how they established the norms of the site. The founders wanted a particular kind of community so they made fake accounts post and vote in ways that reflected that desire. Posts with grammatically sound English were upvoted, text speak was downvoted.

All I could think while watching this was how much it looks like No Man’s Sky.
