Ooh, that’s nice. I could see that effectively replacing disqus comments below articles. Cool beans!

I think your idea is a good one, and I’d like to see that happen someday.
I would point out though, that Apple was a behemoth company with large teams and massive budgets (essentially unlimited resources). Whereas Lemmy is just two guys barely scraping by a living wage from donations while slowly tackling an endless list of bug reports and feature requests.
Tossing Lemmy in the equivalent of a fish tank to motivate the devs would, most likely, just cause extreme burnout and a throwing up of hands. They are resource and time limited to a pretty extreme degree considering how popular Lemmy has become, and that should be appreciated and taken into account.
It used to be a much more significant decline, it seems to have leveled off mostly at 45k, so those who are left are pretty dedicated. I’m sure we’ll get another influx if Reddit messes up badly again.
I’ve never installed it myself, I’ve only used it on the instances that offer it, such as my home instance at slrpnk.net.
Ah, that’s unfortunate. As an alternative, I have seen some online games name their bots with a random name generator that’s designed to sound somewhat real, like AnnoyingPidgen or WrecklessRaptor. If the voting account naming system was more like that, it would be easier to notice voting patterns/manipulation while still being anonymous.
Ah! got that mixed up, thanks for the correction ^^
Regarding the voting account having no name, does that mean it will be a random string of letters and numbers? I get that it will still be possible to discover vote manipulation or mass downvoting with that, but I suspect it would be more difficult to detect initially or without some deeper analysis, since it’s harder to recognize or remember a random string compared to a human made username.
There’s Proton Photon, an actively maintained desktop ui alternative for Lemmy.
What I saw over there was a large portion of his community pleading with him to delegate administrative tasks to the community, as it became increasingly clear the website was becoming too much for a single guy to manage (he was the only moderator of like 30+ communities that were full to bursting with spam, as well as the sole site admin). He never approved the many applications to help moderate, and said he was extremely slow to trust others, so never appointed a second admin, and instead just continued to silently work on the codebase as the site became unusable from spam.
I think his extreme distrust and desire to do everything himself combined with his medical issues led to extreme burnout, and ultimately its downfall.
The Eternity Dev has returned, and released a new update for it. Last I checked the update hasn’t released on f-droid due to the build failing, but it is available on aurora or play store.
Yes, those image layouts are fantastic for art communities! It definitely still has a lot of rough edges, UI wise.
I think he’s made some good strides with the mod tools, as seen here: https://piefed.social/post/167045
I’m glad we have a couple promising alternatives, and it’ll be exciting to see how they evolve differently ^^
Piefed is another Lemmy compatible alternative that looks quite promising: https://piefed.social/
[email protected] might interest you. It’s an experimental community that employs a really interesting bot that scans users all across the lemmyverse, and prevents the most toxic people from participating. It seems to work fairly well, so far.
Thank you both for continuing to improve piefed, massively appreciate your efforts!
XMPP would be the best choice at this point in time, as it doesn’t suffer the downfalls of Matrix (though even Matrix would be better than Discord).
You will need to create a new account, but it is possible to export all of your subscriptions to a new account. There should be a thing you can click for that in your settings menu to download the export file, which you would then import into your new account.
Your old comments will not transfer, however.
Sublinks and piefed don’t compete with lemmy, or at least, they don’t weaken the ecosystem since they are all inter compatible.
The Photon UI for lemmy can play embedded videos.
If you want to create a self-hosted chat community, XMPP would probably be the best bet, as it supports solid encryption. My instance owner has one set up for the community, and it’s worked pretty great to coordinate with other mods.
I believe to ping someone, you need to put an @ symbol before their name instead of /u/. Depending on how you’re interacting with Lemmy (web or app) it should provide some means of auto completing the ping.
