I was going to use one, but then I just massively increased the character count of my soapbox instance. At 60k I was able to post the first drafts of entire chapters of my book.

My argument about why would be more honest than other apps is that it would be distributed and self-hosted. Most dating apps are trying to eventually monetize you. It isn’t that the users are more or less honest, is that the platform for themselves are less honest because they need to make you feel like it’s worthwhile popping money on their dating website. Moreover, a self-hosted solution doesn’t need to impress investors by having 12 billion users.

Way back when fbxl was powerusrs gaming in the late 1990s, one of the few articles I wrote on there was saying basically the same thing even back then. It isn’t good for society to be chasing down $300 boxed copies of games just to see a slice of history.

It should be like trademark: use it or lose it.

I’m ok with old games being sold, btw. There was a time I owned every game on gog on principle. (Today there’s too much to possibly lol)

One big problem is that a fediverse dating app would be honest and most are scummy and fraudulent.

A short but very nice article, and some good discussion about meta that isn’t just “press the ban button”. It’s important to note that threads and Lemmy probably won’t have much to do with each other since it’s a Twitter clone.

One big thing is what I always say: decentralization is strength. Spread out over different instances and start your own instances or what happened on Twitter will just happen again.

We’re not stuck in here with them, they’re stuck in here with us.

I was thinking about that, it makes sense for Facebook to try federation so you can access the Instagram, Facebook, whatsapp and meta accounts universally from whatever account you have.

So how do you do that if you’re meta? Start with activitypub, an existing standard, and then once you’ve learned how it works reprogram it to be proprietary. Same story as Google and xmpp.

Say what you will, certain communities won’t have a problem either way because there’s no way Facebook will willingly federate with them for longer than an hour.

If nobody has mentioned it yet, there is a list of instances somewhere of admins who are pledging to defederate from Meta if they open a site. That would be a good start.

I think almost by definition anyone who runs an instance is anti-corporate. If they were pro-corporate there’s a free to use big tech universe right there they can use.

I don’t think Lemmy/kbin will have much to worry about since I don’t think it’s super compatible with a Facebook, but mastodon etc probably have a lot to be concerned about.

It depends, but most of the time the answer is yes.

If you just host a single user instance for yourself, it doesn’t need to be some massively scalable thing.

My POV is a bit different than most people, because I built my own ship, and I reach out to other instances using it.

Because I agree, I don’t want to be relying on someone else to maybe grace me with a fediverse account.

Realcaseyrollins was on this part of the fediverse for a long time, he routinely posts really decent stuff. He has a lot of posts on communities on narwhal.city that can be federated back here.

That’s why we need to decentralize. If there’s 100 communities over 50 servers, then it doesn’t matter which website goes down or defederates. It’s only if everyone stays on one or two instances that the fediverse breaks.

Over on mastodon, big instances have gone down, people notice but it isnt the end of the world.

I tried both, and I prefer the look of kbin, but ultimately I went with Lemmy because I couldn’t get kbin federation working. It’s only a matter of time until kbins improves, when I first tried Lemmy it was really tough to install from source on bare metal so I went with lotide instead. Unfortunately, Lemmy’s federation broke with lotide and kbin doesn’t federate at all yet so I needed something in a hurry that works.

Another thing that could affect my choice would be the back-end. With the backend of kbin being php and the backend of Lemmy being rust, I expect that if you’re hardware constrained federation could be more responsive on Lemmy. I experienced something similar when I moved from friendica (pure php) to pleroma (Erlang).

If it’s not a question of setting up an instance, I’d prefer kbin, and later on I might set up an instance once it’s had some time to mature.
