People who have been engaged in an authoritarian system for so long that they “can’t see the forest for the trees” are lost when they experience anything else. They are driven to recreate the centralized authority, because it is life as they know it.

Each of the three largest instances now are working to be a standalone replacement for Reddit

Beehaw has been it’s own thing for a couple years now. It has never wanted to be Reddit. They have done such a good job of curating their instance with excellent communities and membership that the Rexxitors want to join it and make it into THEIR replacement for Reddit.

There are 4 admins and 30-something mods.

The person I was replying to was concerned about having a back-up account that would be on an instance that wouldn’t be down. Several of the larger instances have had down-times as they’ve struggled to handle the overload, as the commenter found to their dismay.

Putting their back-up account on one of the smaller instances rather than one of the popular ones would give that person the stability they are seeking.

I’ve made an account on beehaw and lemmy.world as well under the same username, and I probably will make ones under other popular instances just in case.

Probably a better choice is UNpopular instances. Smaller ones. People who don’t quite grasp the federation concept are flooding in from Reddit, joining the larger instances out of FOMO, and overwhelming them.

No worries! That’s a known bug, and happens to a lot of us. It’s on the list to be fixed.

I have no intention of going back. I’m much happier here.

There are two excellent lists I’ve seen. One is a community/sub browser made by someone on feddit.de, the other is a comprehensive list of reddit subs that have been duplicated in the Fediverse. (That one is surprisingly huge!). I didn’t make note of either of those, but surely someone will be along shortly with the links.

They act like everyone already uses reddit and the users are so addicted they’ll put up with anything.

It seems like a lot of users are. I deleted my Reddit account (for whatever good that does) but have gone back to peek a few times - very few people seem to care. The black out, the app shenanigans, the power-mad mods; it’s just a minor inconvenience. API, IPO, VC, what’s that? Just gimme my crude humor and canned outrage!!

They are? I was able to subscribe immediately. Wonder if it’s just being slow now. A few things I’ve subscribed to the last day or so have been slow to show up on my subscription list and I assumed it was the influx from Rexxit bogging things down a bit.
