For me, aside from picking initially between kbin and Lemmy and then picking an instance (and the whole concept of instances), it was not having an algorithmically created feed. It took a bit to wrap my mind around since all of the social media apps and sites I was used to (and still use) provides this.

I was confronted with building my own feed by topic of interest (aka community or magazine) or else.face a firehose of all content from all local or federated instances. I mean, I did it, so it wasn’t that big a barrier, but it still required effort and conscious decision making on my part just to set up the thing to be usable. It’s probably one of the reasons why I don’t use Mastodon that much, because it’s easier to join/subscribe to topics in kbin and Lemmy (at least in my experience). Mastodon seems to be for following individuals and organizations, and that’s even more work (for me).

I don’t mind chocolate in my peanut butter. But I don’t want Meta in my Fediverse.

Have all of the Lemmy instances (and kbin ones, too) now added email requirements, captcha, and maybe the little paragraph asking why you should have an account that Beehaw does?

Also, how do you identify bot accounts? Can you bulk ban accounts or.do they all have to be examined and dealt with individually?

ETA: I wasn’t suggesting the paragraph. Just wondering what the instances are putting in to prevent bots. I actually tried to sign up for Beehaw, wrote my little paragraph, and then got the pinwheel of death, lol. I was never able to sign up, but lucked out with a kbin.social account. I have to add that it’s pretty disappointing to be downvoted for simply asking a question. Feels like what I left at Reddit.

Tell her about setting up an account here. Give her some guidance on which instance to first try, how to subscribe to magazines/communities, etc.

I simply thing Reddit is using the opportunity to rid themselves of anticapitalist subs, the ones that would harm their image for the IPO. Remove the sources of future dissent.

I think others are noting how it can be like this. In my experience:

• My kids’ school accounts can only send emails to and receive emails from their teachers’ email addresses. All other emails, including those from fellow students, are blocked.
• I frequently have issues with whitelisted email addresses at work. They sometimes are blocked and I have to go through the tedious whitelisting process all over again.

My limited understanding of this is once a Meta instance user follows or communicates with another user or magazine/collection on a kbin, Lemmy, Mastodon or any other Fediverse instance, that account is now accessible to everyone on that Meta instance. Other people with Meta accounts can see those kbin etc. posts on their federated timeliness. What that also means is that there is less of a reason to visit kbin, Lemmy etc. for their content and create an account in one of their instances. Meta becomes the face of the fediverse… In other words, it can kill off the need for non-Meta instances. (Maybe I am misunderstanding this. If I am, please someone provide the correct info!)

I personally do not want a Meta instance account because I like the anonymity of my kbin and Mastodon (and Reddit) usernames. I updated my FB pic once and Meta automatically updated my IG one. My IG handle was automatically that of my FB one. It was very annoying (and inhibiting). I don’t want everyone and their Nana seeing what my interests are.

Plus, it may just be another way to data mine and will be filled with ads and boosted posts from magazines im not subscribed to and people and hastags I have no interest in.
