Also, I’ve been living in the Internet you describe since 1990. All it takes is intentionally saying no to the corporate offerings; there have been self-hosted and crowd-hosted communities the entire time.
Every once in a while I miss Fidonet though.
So far it feels to me like Mlem is heading in the direction of Alien Blue, and Memmy is intentionally in the style of Apollo.

It’ll be interesting to see what Apple does, between this and the USB-C mandate.
Considering they currently sell multiple phone form factors, they may just decide that the EU gets more expensive phones with removable batteries and USB-C, and the rest of the world continues to get what they’ve got.
Also, I’ll be interested to see how “removable” gets defined. I’ve replaced iPhone batteries, so they’re technically removable.
Or, Apple might claim that their MagSafe battery packs make them compliant.

Indeed; I’ve put in my request for all my Reddit content and plan to make it available out of context elsewhere. I haven’t decided if I’m going to scrub it or not yet.
