Absolutely, very vigilant. I want nothing from the bad corps. and especially just here. Though I use some things from some of them, try to keep it minimal.
Yeah, but if they flood the fediverse with their P92 Twitter killer they’ll try to own the whole space, overwhelm it and warp it to their own ends.
Aye great read and very illuminating. We gotta protect the fediverse from corporate insidious destruction. This quote stood out to me:
And because there were far more Google talk users than “true XMPP” users, there was little room for “not caring about Google talk users”. Newcomers discovering XMPP and not being Google talk users themselves had very frustrating experience because most of their contact were Google Talk users. They thought they could communicate easily with them but it was basically a degraded version of what they had while using Google talk itself. A typical XMPP roster was mainly composed of Google Talk users with a few geeks.
In 2013, Google realised that most XMPP interactions were between Google Talk users anyway. They didn’t care about respecting a protocol they were not 100% in control. So they pulled the plug and announced they would not be federated anymore. And started a long quest to create a messenger, starting with Hangout (which was followed by Allo, Duo. I lost count after that).
For example, lemmy.world are pissed at being de-federated because it excludes them from Beehaw communities.
Are they, though? I’ve read a lot about it, and everyone over there seems to more or less understand it, kind of just shrug about it now, and have moved on. Lemmy world sees it’s bigger than beehaw now, has tons of its own content, still has access everywhere else and will be fine.
You sound like a great and super reasonable person. Reddit was lucky to have your help and it’s a shame they don’t appreciate you and mods like you more.
same, +1 for Porkbun, been good for me for a long while. Have also used Name.com for a long while and it’s decent. I think I like Porkbun more now, though.
Wow that’s interesting. For me as a consumer that would negate the value of the registrar - I would probably be wrong, but as a consumer maybe would have assumed that domains bought there have some easier integration into the Google ecosystem, with some convenience benefit even if small.
Will they still? I don’t use Squarespace (but a lot of people must be, for them to have that much pull, damn) but would they still have such benefit? I guess the benefit is Squarespace integration.
This includes Google’s special TLDs they own and administer? Article didn’t say.
It would hurt Spez’s job - that guy is on pace to get shitcanned.
Freaking agreed. If they would have started off with reasonableness and respect for the users I would have paid. Note I’d rather pay 10x more to run a Lemmy instance, ha.
Depriving the libs of a favored platform via making it conservative and unruly, and weakening its democratic potential against authoritarian states like Saudi Arabia, is the theory.
Kagi is great for me for 3 reasons:
+1 for Kagi.com, been using it for a long while, it rocks and is definitely worth paying for.
Nice new instance! I’ll come check it out and subscribe to a community. I just made a new one yesterday too, Lemmy.pro
Hmm that’s an impressive development! I’ll subscribe to your world news sub to give it a try. It’s heavy on UK sources and Al Jazeera, which is ok by me but what’s the makeup of your feed derived from? Can you share the method so others could do our own?
