Most motherboards store the password in SRAM along with all of the other BIOS settings. Removing or shorting the backup battery will clear everything.
Some motherboards store the password in non volatile memory. That’s usually done in computers intended for business use. If you forget the password, you have to get a reset code from the manufacturer after proving that you are the owner of it.
There is an experimental storage format that can store large amounts of data in a fused quartz disc. The data will not degrade with time since the bits are physically burned into the quartz.
That would be faster than the RAM on most systems!

The chipset splits a few PCIe lanes from the CPU into many PCIe lanes for lower speed devices to use. Of course those lanes all share the same bandwidth with each other and with the USB and SATA ports in the chipset.
Placing a capacitor in parallel with the LED should be sufficient to prevent it. That would form a low pass filter when combined with the current limiting resistor for the LED.
The attack is not really practical though. The smart card has to be read for 65 minutes while recording the power LED. The cards are normally only read for a fraction of a second.
This is one of the many reasons why you don’t buy devices that require cloud services to function.

They would probably have to switch to LiFePO4 batteries to get 5 years reliably. That would increase the thickness of the phone quiet a bit if you want the same capacity.
Lipo batteries are not capable of being cycled daily for 5 years, even under ideal conditions.
