Cellphones and streaming devices often have extremely limited space allowed for caching content and aren’t designed for serving content but are heavily used for consuming content. Most younger users aren’t watching YouTube from a browser, it’s mostly coming from phones and streaming devices. Android may be less stringent but Apple is very aggresive in how the caching can be used and managed.

. Additionally because cell phone usage is often 99.99% used to download and bandwidth on a cell services is generally treated as aggregate they will often only Qos tcp acks and heavily deprioritize literally everything else to make room for download bandwidth.

How does that work for people using things like cell phones and or streaming devices or those behind cgnat such as many cell carriers use?

A lot of folks that use services like YouTube are not doing so on devices equipped to donate bandwidth.

I mean just some basic calculations. 10 minute video at 1080p running 8 Mbps compression.

That’s 600 MB per video in bandwidth.

Times that by….30,000 streams and boom. 18 TB of data. And that’s probably not even “viral.”

Even if fully decentralized. Many vps providers and isp have bandwidth limits. One video on your self hosted channel goes viral and boom. Instance is down.

Every “mainstream” (ie: not tech focused) source I have seen discussing threads has been keenly missing the whole federation component and focused on it being a twitter replacement competition.

The whole federation thing is probably too abstract for most.

I’m a bit new to running an instance. There seem to be tools created for finding instances and communities. But not something that does the above.

Im aware. Thats why I was asking the admin if they were open to sharing such a possible list, even privately. It would help me save time. Heck it could be a github list we could share (again even privately) if I ran across new instances. They are sprouting up all over the place, mines not really an exception there either.

Yeah i see that, but that doesnt really list the reasons some were removed. So prior to @[email protected]’s comment I was kinda wondering why some may or may not have been dropped from beehaw.

Is there a central place to track these instances?. Or do you all have a text list or the reasons you defederated some that you may be open to sharing (even privately). I was looking for something specifically to avoid things like illegal content and the like.

That’s sounds…not possible. At least at the current iteration of the software. It also seems like kinda the opposite of what the fediverse was meant to be.

I just looked at one of my communities and the only main setting is whether mods can post. You can’t set perms at the community level to exclude certain users or make them private

Again. Its not a criticism of beehaw. Just kind of an example of you are who you associate with sometimes IRL, but in the fediverse. Its unfortunate and I understand why they are building what they are. I support that.

Its also a reason why having very large concentrated communities can be bad and why federation or de-centralization is important. But with that, it does appear we need some better tools for cross-instance moderation and cross-instance community grouping so that you can say…create a “technology multi-community” that includes [email protected] and [email protected] and [email protected] or whatever etc. etc.

That would allow for decentralization but still give people the ability to browse them as one community and if you so happen to be registered on something like lemmy.world, then you cant see the beehaw.org content but can see the rest etc.

I’m having the same thoughts on registration. Require email at least to just…reduce throwaways and trolls. Mines application only because “closing” it is confusing as it just spins. And I may leave it to application only.

Same with NSFW content. I don’t know of a good way to defederate some of those instances and track that. So i unchecked the box and tossed a disclaimer in. I really just don’t want drama from my hosting provider. Just want a place people can login and go to some of the other instances that are more focused on curating content and communities. I just dont have time for that myself.

Are we talking flying drones only? Because i have a vaccum cleaner and mop that is basically a little ground drone to clean up my messes. I can even take over control and “fly” it with the camera feed.

Right now my instance isnt open. But given a possible surge coming on 7/1 I am chewing on opening it up to be a “user-only” federated instance. As in, no real communities, just a speed instance to setup an account and join other communities.

Not sure if im going to even do it, just thinking about it right now.

Absolutely. Multiple ways to address some of these issues. Hopeful for the future.
