The interesting thing about Twitter is how it shows how a significant part of our society works. It is kind of about amplifying fame and suggesting that we should all cares about meaningless 240 character posts or what these guys think.
That news media types love Twitter is kind of an indictment of how news works.
Actually in terms of the threadiverse it makes more sense to join medium to large instances that align with your interests and values. That way most of your posts and subscriptions are local. Then it makes sense to subscribe to the best other communities that are missing from your instance. This reduces fragmentation which is good.
Keep in mind your suggesting promoting fragmentation which is just nuts. Building community scale is the biggest issue at the moment. Keep in mind too that as long as there are 7 or so major instances, the threadiverse is not centralized. It is just more cost and manpower effective to join and donate to larger instances rather then everyone run their own. Presumably there is an optimal instance size. I have no idea what that is.
Long run it would be good to have some tech that fights community fragmentation like the ability to aggregate communities. The other approach is just to let the dynamics choose these and let minor communities just get starved which seems to be the current approach. Maybe that is better, I have no idea.
Depends on what people want. For threadiverse who cares, this is topic based not people based.
For a lot of micro blogging this is for people that either want to be the one people follow or for people that want to follow those people. I am not one of those people. You do have a point though about those people. That is not the the threadiverse though… not related to lemmy or kbin.
Drivers vary though. For tube sites it is more about monetization. So that it yet another driver.
Do not think it is first. I have been seeing it fairly often since I joined a coupled weeks ago. Nice term though. Not sure where it started.
Keep in mind that there is no assumed privacy on the threadiverse. Just put your user or display name into any search engine. Everything is public. This is no different then Reddit or Usenet. If you want some privacy about all you can do is anonymous identities but your still open to textual analysis and what you say. So do not assume privacy in any deep way.

Keep in mind the recent discussion was about 2 instances. There are about 300 instances on the Lemmy part of the Fediverse. The two instances that were de-federated were in the top 10 in terms of size so not exactly nothing though.
A few points about #1 I did not see talked about. First global ID is of a lot less value on Forums then on things like Mastodon. At least the way I use forums I have no interest in building a persona. Frankly would prefer totally different IDs on different servers and frankly I think we should encourage people to be subject focused not persona focused on Lemmy anyway. There’s to much of this ego stuff that goes on on other platforms.
The second thing is logging into multiple systems is a solved problem. If you do not have a password manager get one. Bitwarden or one of the LastPass versions depending on your platform for example. Another better way is SQRL or U2F. There is also a more recent thing, maybe PassKeys (?), cannot remember. In particular central authentication servers are nuts. Not even LastPass that specializes in them could do it correctly. Just NO. More then that let us not rebuild Reddit. We do not want central infrastructure.
For Reddit, it is not even specific people. It is people interested in a topic. So easy to go elsewhere.
I agree. Even though I always knew there was more then Reddit, Reddit kind of becomes the place. For me included, even though I have used Forums of all sorts for over 40 years. So thinking Reddit is the only place is what they want you to think and it is easy to start thinking that way. Frankly it takes some un-thinking to actually come to one’s senses.
The thing you getting wrong is if you go to /r/technology you are only seeing one subreddit on Reddit. It is not all Technology forums on the internet nor is it even all the Tech stuff on Reddit. You never see it all. The world is big, you never will. You just though you were because Reddit is well known, and the Technology sub-reddit is well known to you. You made a choice just to use that subreddit still and Reddit has no interest in federating with other sites. At least on the Fediverse you can see most things on the Fediverse if you choose.
You might want to read the Ferengi Rules of Aqusition. As someone who lives in the US this is strangely like a lot of things. Both amusing and a bit scary.
That does kind of tell you something about their fees.
I do not use the Aurora Store, no experience either way. I have used F-Droid and and like it. My phone though I do not side load. I get from Google Play Store only. Also makes stuff easy to recommend if it is there. Bad part of Google Play Store is almost impossible to find FOSS stuff. Have to know what your looking for.

Check out AntennaPod for Android in the Play Store. It is a great podcast RSS client and it comes with a database of podcasts you can search. You can add your own too. For textual stuff I use Flym, but I do not know if that is still in development or not so verify either way.
So yes RSS is still great. Biggest issue is some sources have discontinued in favor of walling content in their own apps which is not exactly user friendly.
Question: Does anyone know what security and privacy extensions are considered redundant in light of recent Firefox improvements in the past few years?
For example, I saw several people recommend Privacy Badger for example. I thought I heard somewhere that was considered not needed now. I do not know for sure so am frankly confused by this and some of the other extensions which I too use to use.
For me I have kind of stopped using most security/privacy extensions except uBlockOrigin and then just configuring Firefox rather tightly. Not sure if this is best approach or not. On one hand every extension increases the attack surface and the uniqueness of the browser so there is a point about less is better, on the other hand some may be useful too.

For what it is worth, I am about your age. The special thing about Reddit is scale. I come from the days of Usenet and it had scale. CompuServe did too. So this can suceed if people want it too. I am not going back for now. Deleted my app. Thinking about deleting my account. For me Tax, Law, and Medical stuff seem like the difficult gaps.

This I think. Every platform that is not just a mess needs moderation. There are things you just cannot allow especially in a platform that is suppose to be a safe space or at least not a total shit fest. Some of this is the law too, CSAM for example or copyrighted material. The rest is just about not putting up with trolls. When lemmy was 1000 users total this problem is a lot different then 1 million to 10 million or 100 million. It is just that Behaw is a bit more particular on one hand and probably more of a target on the other.
