  • The question isnt easy to answer as you dont need an instance to participate. It is far better if you join an instance and spare yourself the hassle of admin and/or mod work. If you absoluteky want to have a community which you can build and mod, you can do that on any instance. If you think you can provide something that nobody else can then you could open an instance. But in that case i suggest finding people to do this with because it is a large project.

And only after all those considerations, you should think of the tech aspect. You can get a vps for 10 bucks a month and host lemmy on it, probably amongst other things. But i would probably not do it if youre not really curious about server hosting stuff. Managed hosting (which is the offer you mentioned) is another idea but it isnt worth it imo. Rarely will someone really have the need to use that and then the company provoding needs to make money so you will lose.

  • We’re getting nowhere here. You’re in the “i own your ass” mindset of capitalism. Thats not a base for discussion. They likely also ate and took a shit on time paid for by people. The whole idea of only paying for a specific task is so fucking dystopian.

Just take a second to imagine yourself in their shoes. Waking up, not taking a shower (slightly joking but who cares), either eating something or smoking some weed or both, sitting down in front of a computer, writing code, working on bugs, writing documentation, eating, going outside (hopefully), going to sleep.

As someone who does this shit for a living, you cant clearly divide tasks in non manual jobs and even then it is micromanagement which will likely make a lot of workers sick.

I dont know where you have the idea from. Its not real. Of course they might fix a bug in their instance, answer a modmail. Moderating a lemmy instance isnt that crazy of a deal. Of course its labour but the idea to call them scammers because they moderated their instance feels like you might wanna smoke less, more or something else (metaphor for get your head straight).

This judgemental shit just isnt healthy in this place and people hating on other people doing shit for the community isnt as cool as edgy as you think.

  • Thats not how moderation works. Misinformation and Disinformation, especially about oppressed minorities have no space on lemmy. It is okay to not know it and read up on it but just because you dont double down doesnt mean the initial point must stay. Additionally, feel free to host your own instance with all the “varied views” you want.

  • Its not that hard. If hitler (or name your villain) made and kept improving a cancer drug and nobody else is taking up the mantle, you’d probably care more about keeping people alive (or in this case off of heroinbook and reddit) than the person.

Lets be honest, 2500 per dev is a joke. They could be making three times that if they just accepted one of the offers that are thrown at them BECAUSE of lemmy and other projects showing their skills.

Barely keeping them alive is not helping their views or anything they care about besides lemmy being improved. For transparency reasons I too would prefer to have separate fundraiser for ml directed at ml users but thats a different topic.

Another important point is that reddit stans would want you to hate tankies grrr and not donate so lemmy goes away as one of the few alternatives. A alone would fund these two if I could just because fuck reddit.
