So, from up close it seems like people can have their own servers (i checked wurzelmann.at which is currently on the frontpage) but they do not seem to have their own frontend.

This indeed makes it so that for people to actually SEE your content you must federate with one entity and are controlled by them.

Imo this is very bad because it takes the freedom out of federation. Yes, you dont need to login to an app but if they ban you or defederate or delete your post, nobody will see it, right?

Please someone who has tried and gets the technical details shed light on this.

You are missing the point.

If lucifer was the only one having ice cream and you wanted ice cream, you would have to either go to lucifer or make your own (or ask someone to do it for you).

This is what the fediverse is about. Regaining control of our media. Your point that it is in any way too lacking to join or invest time into is self defeating as you and many others are needed to get it to that point.

So I‘m saying either accept that your work is needed to get any non billionaire owned/non corporate platform to work or stop pretending you care about your data.

„The content“ is there. Its just the addiction inducing, never ending dopamine that doesnt flow as freely which is great.

If you follow the topics that are most prevalent on the fedi (eg freedom, activism, technology, diversity) you will not run out unless you scroll for many hours a day, which is suggests you find yourself a hobby.

Also, the self fulfilling prophecy of „the fediverse is too small, I go to big platform“ will keep the fediverse small.

I‘d say I‘ve fully embraced the fediverse for over a year, running half a dozen instances for many fediverse services.

The discoverability is indeed an issue for many services but the worst on peertube. It actually has great content but nobody sees it due to it not being properly suggested.

On lemmy vs reddit I can proudly say a lot of topics have great content and its not easy to run out of it if you subscribe to varied communities. One big problem is how spoiled the users of commercial socials are. The amount of people there is of course insane compared to here so someone used to heroine (x, facebook and reddit) will always feel withdrawal on lemmy, mastodon and such.

Imo, we need to keep making strong, compelling cases for the fediverse, against the corpoverse and increase our technical arsenal. Peertube needs clients for every platform and a central discovery (for example instances.joinpeertube.org).

We also need more straightforward installation procedures so more people can host their own. Of course non tech folks will have a hard time either way but a „fire and forget“ compose file or ansible playbook, ideally next to one another like with awesome selfhosted on github.

Matrix is a protocol, unlike discord. The problems often come with the different clients. I personally suggest fluffychat wherever I go since that is the most usable in my experience. Element I have installed as a backup on all my devices if I need to troubleshoot.

Same as with apple‘s „iforgot“ service: the privilege of privacy comes with responsibility. You must either take care of a couple things yourself or pay someone to do it. On discord, a huge margin of people pays with real money and the rest with their data.

To the topic: Matrix rooms have a version and the server you make them on matters a lot. Therefore I would stay on org if none of you know your way around. If you have skills, make your own and configure it in the most non individual way possible for maximum compatibility. If people cant join even when you invited them, you might have to check if the servers each federate correctly. If not, switch servers or tell your admin.

I really hope the EU rips each of these corpos a new one. This idea of „we get more functionality than others do so users come to us“ is disgusting with any company but corpos should be legally kept from doing it.

I agree with your point. I‘d like to add that it should become illegal to close off digital spaces and they need to provide an API for intercommunication, free of charge. Of course, there needs to be room for making scraping for profit or just plain overwhelming servers for competitive reasons as hard as possible.

My first instinct was „meh“ but this reads like a great guide for non tech users to grasp the fedi.

On the lemmy part I‘m partly with you. Lemmy itself is not the issue. It is what it does with postgres. I have multiple postgres instances, one for each service. The lemmy postgres is insane while the mastodon postgres is easy on the cpu.

Sadly, I‘m not a database expert, otherwise I would help. So donations are the only form I can help with at this point.

From other comments I read, the database seems to be the issue, not lemmy. Is uses postgres and that uses the resources. Lemmy itself is no problem.

Lemmy is heavier on the cpu than for example mastodon or matrix are but a lot less on the harddrive. Its insane. I use matrix the most, then lemmy, then mastodon. Still, mastodon sucks hdd like crazy, matrix as well. Only lemmy is easy on the hdd.

Of course I‘m running private instances. You can never know why public instances go bonkers. Maybe someone is abusing it for other things.

Anyway, lemmy does have some moderation tools but I agree. They need work. You have to know a lot about linux, databases and have to figure out a lot of stuff if you have problems with lemmy. Thats not okay.

But as always with foss. If you run a public instance, you should accept donations and if they dont cover the costs so you can pay someone to make a fork for you that has what you need, you might be doing something wrong.

I‘m running a public instance on two threads and I think 2 gb of ram. A private instance shared with other services on 6 threads and 8 gb of ram. Make of that what you want. :)

I would probably rent a vps which you could extend if needed but start small. With 2 threads and 4 gb of ram at least.
