I couldn’t imagine being a moderator there, the amount of shit they must see uploaded has to be enormous. This would apply to every media-oriented instance but due to their nature I am guessing it’s worse

You can’t make a baby in one month with 9 women, the same way you there’s a limit to making an app evolve faster by throwing more ressources at it
People on here and on mastodon are really pessimistic overall I’ve found. I still need to go to Twitter despite all the bots and engagement farming going on these days if I want to learn about new product releases or the newest possibilities of the newest technology that was released just yesterday.
I feel like the only news that get shared here and that actually get engagement are the bad ones about the war in Ukraine or in Palestine, or about anti-minority laws but we never see the good news like the fact that France added abortion as a constitutional right.
Luckily I do not think they will be able to add Ads to federated posts since ads need to be explicitly disclosed, and that means they can be easily blocked even at the server level
Gatekeeping the fediverse while also wanting it to stay alive and to not be “EEE” my meta won’t work unfortunately.
This is really cool for blogs, especially with for having comments without relying on a 3rd party company that collects cookies and requires a central account
It’s the Twitter app if it was made by backend people
Bluesky’s official app sucks ass, that’s already enough of a reason for me to not use it for the time being. It really is terrible, shitty web view banking app level of terribleness and speed
discord tries to be a good company challenge (impossible) (deleted in 24h)
I think so, I had it in my downloads file for like a year or two and I just found it
This time I don’t think it is an extenguish scenario. I think this is more of a preventative move to one-up the EU on interoperability. They want to be able to say “look how good we are, we already were interoperable for x time!”. But of course this could also not be the case and they might just want to kill the network, but I even find that unlikely. Xmpp isn’t dead in fact I use it every day as my phone number for texts and calls and I quite like it. Super robust, I basically never saw any federation weirdness like you could see on mastodon or Lemmy. So in my eyes xmpp didn’t get killed, they got beat by someone who had ressources and made a better product. And it’s not that I don’t think meta can make a great product that users like, but I kind of think that, especially when the competition exists (xwixxer) compared to basically none for Facebook and Instagram
For sending as a message attachment, compression is not nearly as needed since the image is only distributed to one or two people and it’s only one image, so the webp could be transcoded directly to jpeg to have the same quality and the difference wouldn’t be much, I think OPs idea is kinda good
Inb4 the comments saying you should use signal and whatnot and that facebook/meta is evil
Fragmentation will be a huge problem if we want Lemmy and Kbin to succeed. We can’t have 45000 technology communities with 45000 duplicate posts with 45000 different discussions under these posts. We need a way to unify all this in the clients and that, to me, seems like a pretty big issue as you can’t just get all the posts and merge them without ddosing all the Lemmy instances or without other unwanted side effects
XMPP Works fine when it’s setup or when you don’t manage the hosting, but God is it painful to self host an xmpp server. Then you have the clients that are all basically 10 years old at this point, except maybe Dino for linux. It even needs a special setup to work on restricted networks via port 80/443 because it wants port 5222 and 5223, and let me tell you, I’ve spent over a week trying to setup that reverse proxy, it was hell. I’ve never Hosted matrix so maybe it’s worse, but this isn’t the end of my gripes with xmpp. Most basic communication features in 2024 such as replies reactions quoting threads etc.etc. are unsupported ootb, and you need both a client that supports the extensions (often very slow to adapt “new” standards AND a server that has enabled the plugin for that feature.
Xmpp is plain old, and like many like to think, no xmpp was not “triple-E’d”, people simply stopped using it because it’s really inconvenient and the UX is horrible.
