Yeah I mean it’s a better system. People are going to start noticing when they start thinking about that.

It’s a temporary situation. This is early adopter alpha stage shit.

The Fediverse has the potential to be the future. It’s gated behind open sourceheads not being all…open-sourcey about. Making it clunky to use and badly designed and then pulling the establishment economist “you poor schlub you’re just too dumb to get it” card, thereby shooting their own efforts in the foot.

If they can make it open source AND easy to use/intuitive/well designed, then we have a solid future. If not, the future still won’t be those other places.

Everybody’s heads are up their asses about this. It’s a great idea for a fediverse thing.

The real issue is nobody can use it because the damn confirmation emails don’t get sent.

A non-evil, non-corporate tiktok has some huge potential.

I don’t know anything about ml specifically, and I refuse to learn because I don’t give a shit. Lemmy has pockets of crazy like any place. Do your thing, get banned if you get banned, end up where you end up.

Anything big enough becomes a public restroom. Cooperation and syncronization between groups small enough not to devolve in that way seems to be an especially promising path forward.

Tiktok and the sludge of normal social media is the prime suspect here, not types of freaking videos.

As for hosting, that’s gonna have to be built/devised long-term. Nothing to do but get to it!

Mastodon and the fediverse in general are weirdly user-unfriendly, and then some fucking programmer pops in to say,

“Oh! You can fix that! All you have to do is hop over to their github page and…”

If they can make the user experience good, we might get the basis for a new internet, but they’d have to build it first.

Comments say they’re already basically public. I don’t know anything about that, but it’s probably better to merely have a camera in your toilet than have a camera in your toilet that livestreams 24/7.

But I don’t have an especially informed sense of how to run a platform so maybe there’s a bunch of crap I’m not thinking about.
