Taking a look at the current sidebar, it might be nice to reorganize the stats section completely

What I’m thinking is:

By default it will only show some stats, where users can select what stats they want displayed in the settings. This way I can hide the stuff I don’t care about, instead of having to look through the already busy list.

Creating a bunch of accounts possibly to manipulate votes

Looking from the admin level, doesn’t happen that often. Vote manipulation is already something we keep an eye out for, and usually it’s done to highlight certain content (ex. pushing some political angle) rather than boosting one community over another.

I like some bots, but I only subscribe to a bot-only community if the volume of posts is reasonable.

Alternatively, I think both metrics are helpful in different ways

1. Quality over Quantity: MAU counts lurkers equally with active participants. PCM focuses on actual engagement.

3. True Reflection of Activity: A community with 1000 MAU but only 10 posts/comments is less vibrant than one with 100 MAU and 500 posts/comments.

I’d say votes are also an important part of engagement. It helps differentiate between good and bad content. I’m more likely to join a community with a few good posts a day (or even a week) than a bot community with many posts a day. Going by how the subscribers counts change over time, I’d say this is a common experience.

2. Spam Resistance: Creating multiple accounts to inflate MAU is easy. Generating meaningful posts and comments is harder.

While any abuse is bad, spam posts and comments are a bigger concern right now. AI generated spam / link spam is obnoxious and we deal with it often (as admins/mods). While someone could make lots of accounts to inflate MAU, it only really affects the community ranking against other communities and not day to day usage. Lemmy is already considering removing the trending section, and admins usually step in if a bunch of similar accounts are created at once.

5. Easier to Track: No need for complex user tracking. Just count posts and comments.

I’m not sure I understand this point. Are the vote/comment/post calculations very resource intensive?

All that being said

• I don’t see any downside to listing the info in the places you mentioned
• If people want such a sorting option, then sure why not. Give people options

It might be helpful to be able to set default per community for something like this. For example, [email protected], it would be a jumbled mess to have it be all in one thread

What are some of the issues you’d like to see addressed? I don’t use mastodon as much so I’m not familiar with what has / hasn’t been done.

Helping writers and journalists

In this version we’re introducing a new way to highlight writers and journalists on the fediverse. By adding a single line to their HTML, publishers can feature the fediverse profile of the page author in the link previews on Mastodon. That way, when lots of different people are sharing the link, or the link is trending in the News tab, you can easily navigate to the author’s fediverse profile and follow them right from within Mastodon to receive future updates. Publications like The Verge and TechCrunch are already using this.

We’ve also put a fresh coat of paint on our website embeds. You’ve always been able to embed a Mastodon post on your own website, but we’ve made them look a lot better and gave them a more graceful fallback when the source is slow to load or no longer available. Of course, the dialog for embedding a post now looks a lot better as well, offering a simple click to copy button. Keep in mind that you can only embed posts that are public!

I’m looking around for other feeds that don’t have too much spam. Some ideas include

• updates on new releases for FOSS projects
• the patients feed for [email protected], but the feed itself is down currently

I guess it could end up being an arms race.

What if the tool was more of a toolbox, where each instance could configure it the way that they want (ex. Thresholds before something is flagged, etc.) Similar to how automod works, where the options are well known but it’s hard to tell what any particular space is running behind the scenes.

At the very least, tools like this can make it harder for silent vote manipulation even if it doesn’t stop it entirely

I think what we need is an automated solution which flags groups of accounts for suspect vote manipulation.

We appreciate the work you put into this, and I imagine it took some time to put together. That will only get harder to do if someone / some entity puts money into it.

Would you be able to take a screenshot of the map and edit that in as the link URL? Nice thumbnails help a post be seen, and it might let people see the map when the site is getting a hug of death 😄

But I didn’t know Mbin could federate with Lemmy. But I’m sure Lemmy/Mbin probably won’t federate with Pixelfed, or Peertube.

I think all of these are "don’t federate well currently ", but it’s a goal to improve federation over time

For example, Lemmy is federating with Mastodon better than when I first joined. It’s also possible to subscribe to peertube channels from Lemmy, but it’s a bit buggy.

I’ve used the term “threadiverse” for a while and it’s been in use from before Meta threads was widely advertised, but I agree that it can be confusing now

It would be nice to have a descriptor for the format. For example, Mastodon & Misskey are ‘Microblogging’ platforms. Lemmy, Mbin, Piefed, and Sublinks are _____ platforms.

For what it’s worth, admins/employees on Reddit (or any other website) can also see upvote records.
