Matrix is really closer to federated Telegram. It doesn’t have servers in the way Discord does and has no support for voice channels, a major part of Discord.

Yep, pretty much anything can implement it. Discourse is working on an ActivityPub plugin.

Just follow both and if you decide you prefer one, leave the other. It’s the same as on reddit when there are two subs with slightly different names and the same content. One will eventually become larger and people will gravitate towards it.
