@Dirk @MrScottyTay Also I think that one should ask the question, what Meta could do with the data and what it is doing with the data of their users. For their users they use the usage data to present them a feed that the users appreciate. Also they use it to place ads inside of their apps. Also they use the data to serve you ads outside of their system on ad networks that use data from Meta.

All of this is technically not possible for Fediverse users.

@flancian @Dirk Threads has about 200 million monthly users, 33 million daily users. The fediverse has just under 1 million monthly users. Do you really think that 0.5% has any relevance to Meta?

Also: What data do you think Meta will be able to use - and for what? They can’t use this data to serve you ads, simply because they don’t know you. They can’t track you around the web because you don’t have a Meta account.

@cypherpunks I’ve got the feeling as if the author doesn’t know about the existence of relay servers. With them, also a single user instance works really fine, I think.

@Microw @dumbass No. He wouldn’t be happy with ActivityPub as well. He imagines a social network where no one can perform any moderation. He favours Nostr for exactly that reason. Bluesky has got moderation (just like the Fediverse) - which he dislikes.

With their protocol you have got the PDS (Personal Data Storage) that stores your data. Your handle is a hostname, but normally it will not be the hostname of your PDS. In fact you can use any hostname that you have control of. Your account itself is described via the DID that will never change - and that doesn’t contain a hostname. This means that you can move between different PDS without people noticing it at all.

In ActivityPub the data storage is on the same host like your handle and your account’s URL will always point to the host where your data is located. Moving your account is by far not as smooth and highly depends on the system that you are on.

@blue_berry Friendica does have both a chronological feed (that can be sorted by creation date of the post, the date that the post arrived at the system or the date that thread was changed the last time) and also some algorithmic feeds (called “channel”) that displays posts of their followers based on some rules. Also there are channels with posts of all kind that are discussed a lot in the last times. Another channel shows content from people that are followed by the people that I follow. Other ones are language based, etc.

This is a brand new feature and will be part of the upcoming release. Of course the plan is that the user can tweak the rules.

@withersailor Is Twitter paying for anything? From what I hear they don’t pay rent for their buildings anymore, they don’t pay Google or Amazon for their web services anymore. They withhold payments that were meant to go to charities, …

For me it seems as if Elon thinks that he doesn’t need to play by the rules and that he is invulnerable.

@BobQuasit For example I’m using Friendica to participate in this discussion. Friendica aims to be the Swiss knife concerning social media. Also there is Peertube, a video sharing system. Then have a look at Pixelfed which is specialized in sharing pictures.

The fediverse is really wide.

@MrTHXcertified I think that no device should be built in a way that it cannot be disassembled anymore. Concerning the argument “but what about water resistance?”: remember that for a long time there are quartz watches that are water resistant to incredible depths - and their batteries can be replaced.

@withersailor Hopefully it doesn’t end here, but also includes the option to easily replace parts and to forbid using glued parts.
