Knee jerk reaction oh hell no.

When I calm my emotions and think about it, they’re talking to the founders of the software of the Fediverse. They aren’t talking to the maintainers of ActivityPub. In either case the software can be forked and people can move.

However, NDAs are complete bullshit. You gain nothing, so even the benefit of the doubt can be used against you. They’re completely against what the Fediverse is about. And now we can legally NEVER know what was discussed else a few devs doing this for fun and are single devs can be sued into oblivion by one of the most powerful and toxic companies on the planet.

I already am not on Mastodon and I don’t really use PixelFed, but this is classic FB and already sets the precedent of how they want to act within the open set of communities. Anything they touch should instantly be defederated imo.

They have shown time and time again their true colors and they come to us, not with open arms, but behind lawyers and courts. Fuck you Facebook and the toxic money driven bullshit you bring with you.

And anyone that works at Facebook, you’re in the same boat. There’s no turning that ship, you will never chnge it from the inside or out, you will NEVER be able to do the right thing, you do it for money. You are an accomplice, you will NEVER be the moral compass that makes it right, because it’s built on lies for MONEY and nothing else.

Facebook is a detriment to mankind.

More help from companies on letting me know the websites to stay away from. This isn’t the first time DToid did stupid crap. Back on Justin.tv, maybe they had converted to Twitch already, they had a BUNCH of streamers that were ruling the platform, then they said that their streamers would have to review and give positive reviews of sponsored games. All the streamers left the group and Dtoid lost a TON of traction and Twitch exploded from Justin.TV.

This isn’t Proton-like, this IS Proton. Proton is what Valve call their WINE version. Codeweavers actively build WINE and give it away and they’ve looked at the Apple code and it IS WINE.

All of these companies have been money losses from the start. They make massive amounts of money, but they just keep spending more and more and more. Infinite growth is a myth.

Regardless of what happens with all the social platforms, I’m just happy to finally see the Fediverse taking off, giving us choice. That also means the choice to NOT use it. If someone uses Reddit or Twitter over Lemmy/KBin/etc or Mastodon/GoToSocial/etc that is their choice. My choice to is be on an open internet with me controlling my data.

So when you go to the page that’s offline, that’s because the Owncast software is up and running as a webserver. I’ve seen some folks that take the entire page down when they’re not streaming. Really only difference is if there’s a landing page there when you’re not streaming or not.

If you’re putting your content up on Youtube right now, then Peertube can just mirror that content without much work. At least that’s my understanding. I’m not a Youtuber. diode.zone is one I’ve used in the past which doesn’t really have any kind of gatekeeping.

However, I personally enjoy TILVids the most. They’re curated. You ahve to talk to the TILVids admin to get access and he kind of is there to help folks get started and if you take off then he suggests you create your own. That happens with few. TechLore for instance just did this. But he does have a focus on videos that help folks learn things, but even GamingOnLinux mirrors there.

Phones are a bit more ubiquitous for older folks though. Imagine a vulnerability that allows me to post my “pic” as pulling from your phone and it comes up with a picture of your cousin or something. Or if I’m targeting you, you’re an old person that doesn’t understand technology and you see your granddaughter show up in the picture and don’t look at the number or anything. There seems to be a lot of ways this can be abused. I hope I’m wrong and we’ll never see a story about people abusing it, but people pretty much always abuse these things.

Got you. Totally understand. I used to be in the same situation. $5/month is sometimes better spent somewhere else. With Owncast you only really need it up when you’re stream. You could do that from your PC you’re playing on, but idk the kind of overhead that’d cause.

Hetzner is $5 a month for a VPS that would run it. And what constitutes a “server”? A server is just another name for a computer.

I completely forgot this existed. When I read your post yesterday I immediately went out and deployed it for myself and family. Works great, results seem on point so far. I’m already sold.

Nothing stopping Vimeo from plumbing in ActivityPun amd joining the Fediverse. It’s open and the only reason no one does is because the data is valuable and they don’t want to share and play nice.

Understandable. But it’s the chicken and egg problem. Creators don’t want to create content, because there’s no consumers. Consumers don’t want to sign up, because there’s no creators.

So are you the chicken or the egg? :-D

If you’re on one you don’t like anymore you could always change instances and watch videos there. If you’re worried about losing comments, well you can comment from other Fediverse servers such as Mastodon or GoToSocial and they show up on the page for the video. :-)

I use GoToSocial with Sempahore for my microblogging (alternative to Mastodon).

Also Owncast as an alternative to Twitch.

And then I watch tilvids.com and other Peertube instances for videos.

And of course Lemmy. :-D

Oh and then there’s Funkwhale for audio.

It’s all in different states of usability, depending on the communities involved.

Forgot MS owns every game dev now basically. I’ll still support the Obsidian devs with my cash. :-)

I’m on Linux and I don’t have Gamepass. Also while no finanical info has been given with Gamepass, I’d imagine giving money directly to a dev would end up as more? Though I don’t honestly know.
